What Is NYC Alternate Side Parking?

Alternate Side Parking (ASP) is NYC's street cleaning program. During posted hours, you must move your car off alternate-side streets so cleaning trucks can sweep. If you don't move, you get a ticket — currently $65 for most violations.

The city suspends ASP rules on public holidays, religious observances, and weather emergencies. On a suspended day, you can leave your car parked without risk, even if the sign shows posted hours.

Parking meters run on a separate schedule — they're only suspended on Sundays and the six major legal holidays (New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas). On other suspended ASP days, meters remain active.
